Philippians 3:12–15 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.
It is tempting to read what the Apostle Paul writes and dismiss personal application because he’s the Apostle Paul, and we're just ordinary believers. The Lord called and empowered the Apostle Paul to establish churches in strategic cities and to teach them to live all of life guided by the truth of God in every detail of life for the glory of God.
Paul puts himself forward as an example of what gospel transformation looks like. It is not unique to Paul. The transforming resurrection power of Jesus Christ is provided to all believers throughout the age of the New Covenant. The truths about Paul’s radical change from a hostile opponent of followers of Jesus to a zealous proponent of the gospel of Jesus apply to all the Christians in the church in Philippi and to all the Christians in churches that will exist in this age. Consequently, these instructions apply to you.
Paul had a notable life and reputation in Judaism (Philippians 3:1-6). The gospel of Jesus impacted Paul’s life so significantly that he considered his pre-Christ sins and achievements as a pile of dung (what the word “rubbish” – 3:8 – means). After coming to faith in Jesus, Paul devoted his life to seeking to honor and share the will and ways of Jesus in all aspects of his life. Paul’s reference to “this” in Philippians 3:12 is a Christ-immersed life.
Paul’s honest humility is evident in Philippians 3:12-15 as he explains that he is not perfect. He is also on the road of progressive sanctification with every believer on this side of eternity. As Paul writes these inspired truths for believers in Philippi and believers for the coming centuries, his example and challenge are thoroughly applicable.
