The marks of a loving church

Feb07

Colossians 3:14–17 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

The context of the passage above shows the Apostle Paul encouraging the church members in Colossae to conduct themselves with Christ-honoring care for one another. As the capstone of the overarching qualities that need to thrive in the church, Paul tells them to “put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Since love is the binding ingredient to the mixture that produces corporate harmony, Paul wants to ensure people understand what the unifying impact of love will look like in the life of their church.

The evidence of love in the church looks like the people of the church engaged in teaching, fellowship, and edifying musical worship, all being supplied from the word of Christ. Love in the church isn’t primarily about sentimentality and feelings. Fruitful harmony in a local church comes from the power of the Holy Spirit, who enables the people of the church to understand and apply Biblical truth in all aspects of life (Cf. Ephesians 5:18ff.).

Learning the teachings of Jesus, living the teachings of Jesus, and sharing the teachings of Jesus is love in action. Pray that the Spirit of God will empower you to know and share the truths of Jesus and that your church will put on love, binding everything together in perfect harmony.
