Valuing The Truth Of Scripture

2 Timothy 3:16–17 “16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

People will unreservedly acknowledge that there are things they feel are precious in their lives. For some, the family would be at the forefront in their lives. Friends hold a place of distinction in the hearts of many. Investing in a career with growing influence and prosperity is held in high regard. Such a list can become varied and vast.

What about Scripture? Among all the things you value highly, what place would Scripture hold? Not what place should it hold, but what place does it hold. The significance it has in your life can’t be determined solely by reading or hearing it regularly. The importance of Scripture is seen by how learning it and living it make a desirable difference in your attitude, motivations, actions, and reactions.

Many Jewish people knew the Scripture well, but missed the central theme of its message. Jesus challenges the religious Jews of His day saying, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me…” (John 5:39). Submitting to the authority and relevance of Scripture is not to make us spiritually “fat and sassy.” The impact of truth in our lives should cause us to be humble, teachable and compassionate.

We need God to grant us a heart that will hunger for, and respond to, the truth of Scripture in a manner that shows we are consistently sensitive to its message to inform and change us and that we are prayerfully concerned that its message will inform and change others. We desperately need the truth of God to teach us, reprove us, correct us, and train us in righteousness so that we are humbly competent and lovingly capable of living its message out and sharing it with others.

May God help us all to cherish Scriptural truth for the good of our souls and the good of the souls of others!
